How To Use Your ThroForm

You may have received your product and thought: What do I do now? How do I put it on? Why did this not immediately make me throw 500 feet? How can I return this oddly shaped fashion statement?

Let's stop there.

Like any tool, it must be used correctly. Please follow these instructions (and check out our instructional videos on Instagram @throform and YouTube @ThroForm) to properly begin taking advantage of this game changing device, the ThroForm!

So, what does the ThroForm do?

"Practice the wrong way, and you will learn how to do something really well the wrong way." - My middle school gym teacher, mid 2000's

The ThroForm helps to eliminate rounding, lack of distance and accuracy, and even injuries caused by improper form.

It fixes one crucial part of the backhand throw, so you don't practice the wrong way. Let's talk about the "power pocket." Pictures can tell a thousand words, so here is a visualization of a collapsed power pocket vs. a power pocket in the correct position:

Notice the difference between the two pictures. The first picture is a COLLAPSED power pocket and a very un-athletic stance. This causes so many issues from the start, causing rounding, injuries, and a lack of distance and accuracy. Conversely, I have created SPACE on the second photo- allowing a proper reach back. This leads to a proper upper body motion AND forces the rest of your body to get into an athletic stance.

Essentially, the ThroForm inhibits your upper arm from collapsing onto your chest to prevent bad rounding habits while throwing backhands. This will ultimately help you to build muscle memory, and throw more accurately and further with less effort!

Fitting Your ThroForm

Fitting your ThroForm is very important.
First, let's put on your ThroForm. For right-handed throwers, put your left arm through the shoulder strap and attach the hook-and-loop fastener armband around your right arm. (Opposite for left-handed throwers.) The armband needs to sit between your elbow and your bicep. You also want the armband to be snug - Not moving up and down your arm as you throw.

Note: It is not recommended to put the ThroForm on over bulky and long-sleeved clothing, especially the armband. The armband tends to slip up the arm if there is clothing under it, which defeats the purpose of the device. However, you can put a ThroForm on underneath a jacket.

See the images below for step-by-step how to put on your ThroForm:

Now that the ThroForm is on, adjust the back strap slide buckle to properly fit your range of motion. (Note: You may have to take your product off and on again to get the slide buckle the right length for you this first time.) You want to get the upper part of your throwing arm to stop at 90 degrees to your chest.

Correct adjustment is key. Hold your arm out to the side of your body with the ThroForm on. Slowly bring your arm out in front of you. You want the back strap to start resisting your arm before your arm is perpendicular to your chest. Some people may overpower the device more than others. In these cases, adjust as necessary.

The photos below show a proper adjustment, where the ThroForm stops my upper arm at 90 degrees to my chest:

Practicing With Your ThroForm

Practicing with the ThroForm is simple! After ensuring your ThroForm is fitted correctly, begin throwing standstill shots into a net or field to start. Keep the disc in a straight line to the target on the reach back. This will put you into the ideal position so you can start building muscle memory. The goal is to eventually not feel the back strap resisting your arm throughout the entire throw.

The #1 mistake for beginner disc golfers is not reaching the disc straight back.

See the images below:

The first picture is a correct reach back. This disc is on line with the target and the ThroForm is keeping you from rounding. The second picture is incorrect. Your body is in the way of the target.

Tip: Set up a straight line to your target (an extended retriever on the ground, painted lines on a field, golf alignment stick, etc.) Keep the disc above that line during the reach back and throw.

Also, the ThroForm is only intended to be used for backhand throws. During a round, easily remove the hook-and-loop fastener armband when putting or throwing forehands, without having to take off the entire product.

Some Things To Note:

Please keep in mind that there are many variables in the backhand throw: timing, wrist angle, grip, foot placement, posture, etc. The ThroForm fixes one variable in the throw. You will still need to actively work on everything else- as the ThroForm is intended to be an addition to your practice routine.

Ultimately, this device will help you identify and correct bad rounding habits, while building muscle memory for throwing backhands correctly. As long as your ThroForm is worn and used properly, this device is a true game changer!
